So the Abihist government has had enough and as of midnight tonight is begining the process of forcing the Reds camped in Silom out. How do they plan to do this? By cutting off water, food, transport and telephone signals to the area. They stopped short of saying they would bring in the military to crack down but the Reds have vowed to stay put and as the UDD leader Weng Tojirakarn stated"None of the red-shirts are afraid of the threat to cut water and power. We will run at soldiers with our two bare hands, even if they fire at us with assault rifles''.
The problem with this plan is that the government has also warned residents of the area that this will also affect them. If you don't live in Bangkok you need to understand the the Silom area is home to some of the most elite housing complexes, hotels and condominiums in Bangkok. Tons of business people, embassy staff and ex-pats live there. Not to mention those Thais who are wealthy enough to afford it. So it sounds like they are not only going to cut off water, phone and transport to the protest site but if you unfortunate enough to live in the area you will also be caught up in the mess. I have to applaud the government for avoiding an all out military crackdown but I have a feeling that local residents aren't going to be happy about this one which will probably mean that the multicoloured shirts will be out with a vengeance. This is only going to cause more tension, more violence and more unrest.
As I've said before. I have a feeling this is going to get worse before it gets better. I would not put my money on a peaceful end to this situation. My thoughts are with the Reds.
